May: monthly favourites

Bike rides, Notion, The Silence of the White City, Succession, and a few links from Creative Boom and It's Nice That.

A month that ended up being defined by bike rides more than anything else. Apps, a book, a TV show, and a few blogs I enjoyed.

Notion

While I think it's too complex for large projects and documentation work, it's great for personal projects and organising my life. I use it to keep a Kanban board for each of my projects, where I write down ideas and create to-do lists so I don't forget things. What I love about it is that each ticket can hold a running idea. The monthly favourites post, for example, lives as an in-progress ticket for the whole month, and I add things to it as I go. It's also great for tracking expenses and writing notes that I can later share with someone.

Freeform

An app I use on my tablet with the stylus. It's great for taking notes, creating mind maps, and sketching. It's particularly useful for sketching out website flows and planning work tasks. Easy to pick up, and it works better for me than any standard notes app.

Notability

Also a tablet app, great for daily planning and taking notes. I use it mostly for daily plans and meal prep. I'm someone who loves writing lists and to-dos. I'm still figuring out how to add custom templates, since the free options are limited.

Bike rides

A completely random thing to include in a favourites list, but riding a bike around the city is probably my favourite activity at the moment. It ended up defining the whole month. Zagreb is also great for it since the city is mostly flat, which makes rides easy and enjoyable. Much more enjoyable than Split, where the hills make it a lot harder. I've also been impressed with Bajs, Zagreb's bike rental service, where you can rent a bike directly through the app.

Books

The Silence of the White City by Eva García Sáenz de Urturi. A crime thriller set in Vitoria, Spain, following a detective investigating a series of ritualistic murders.

TV shows

Succession. It took about half a season to get properly into it, but now I'm hooked. I’ve only finished the first season so far, and I already can’t wait to see what happens next.

POV: The creative industries are about to split in two on It's Nice That. On companies splitting into those using AI to cut people and those using it to do more with the people they have.
